ColdSpell: Frozen Paradise

Escape/Sound Pollution
Formed in 2005 by guitarist/songwriter Michael Larsson COLDSPELL has enjoyed a pretty good spell since then. Surrounding himself with experienced musicians Michael soon got the band releasing their first album “Infinite Stargaze” in 2009, and in 2011 they struck back with “Out from the Cold”. Both albums were well received. Their brand of heavy, hard and melodic rock characterized by sharp riffs, solid rhythms and great choruses seems to be in fashion…as always.

Opener “Paradise” is a bit of a surprise as bands of this caliber and intent rarely opens up with less than hit material. But from then on the likes of “Angel of the World”, “Goin All the Way” and “Life 2 Live” keep me more than happy for over thirty minutes. As a surprise they round off with more mediocre material. But the chosen style is appetizing, perhaps best described as keys-framed Scandimetal or even Scandi-DIO metal at times. I even detect more than a fair bit of NORUM in the fabulous “Soldiers”. This could have been a grand masterpiece, but is letdown by ending especially. But that leaves the best for next time!
