Cyclone Empire/Sound Pollution

40 WATT SUN sounds like an indie band, but it is Patrick Walker´s (WARNING UK) new project. With him are drummer/percussionist Christian Leitch (THE RIVER) and bass player William Spong. Five new tracks of own and melancholic, with Patrick´s distinct vocals and slow rhythms are promised.

Let´s tune down, both the pace and the guitars. Opener “Restless” is 10.46 and very relying on Patricks´ charismatic voice. He seems very honest in doing the music that suits his wishes. The melody is there, in all slowness, behind a well distorted guitar. The bridge is slow but well-crafted guitar picking. Maybe not genre-typical, and it has resemblances to a jam band. The ensuing “Open My Eyes” is almost the same duration. A tad more boring, more indie-feeling and with more depression seeped in. Patrick has a nice voice, with its limitations, but suited to the chosen style. The band seems to be a unit, and not something temporary. The songs are a tad too lengthy for my liking, the indie touch seems out of place, but I was brought up with the likes of CANDLEMASS and SOLSTICE. They feel very English in “Carry Me Home”, nothing wrong with that, but I don´t particularly associate the sound with doom. No matter what I think Patrick has his fans, but I don´t get very excited about this indie sounding offering.
